Spain

Tour to Spain March 11-16 2004 Costa Blanca

The full party was as follows:
Michael Blumberg,Donald MacLeod-Umpire,Jack Hyams,Mike Palowkar-Umpire,  Charles Fellows-Smith,Chris Edwards,Marcus Whitmore, Daryn Becker,R Cairns, Paul Wakefield, Joe Cole, Simon Barter, Jemille Al-Derajji, Kelvin Sutherland,Daryn Williams, Kevin Smith & Avis Lundberg, Mark Boldick, Steve Smith, the following Nomads resident in Spain played for us in one game-Paul Stanfield and David Oatway.

Nomads arrived safely at Alicante airport only to discover a cock-up over car hire bookings. Nevertheless we made it all to Albir and next day set forth for a new fixture at Campoamor. This proved to be a stunning location though we arrived as much as two hours late in certain cases.Sensibly we were invited to bat so the stragglers did not further delay proceedings.
Paul Wakefield and Jemille Al-Derajji coped with the unusual surface brilliantly, putting on 190 by the 25th over. Any idea the rest of us had that a huge score would be posted was not fulfilled. Charles Fellows-Smith struggled to 12 during 15 overs. The rest found the low bounce disastrous for bold stroke play emphasising the skill of the openers. Eventually 243 was reached, 53 runs in the last 15 overs.
After a good tea the bowlers soon found the damp Fleximat difficult to cope with yet took three quick wickets.Torrevieja opener Smith formerly of Holmesdale stood fast and first he and Esse and then Phillipson played well but the the loss of Smith through injury removed any serious challenge. The home side was bowled out in 39 overs.
Following the match both teams retired to the excellent golf clubhouse where most of the party stayed for dinner. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of the Fleximat this was a fine new location to which we hope soon to return.
The next day the weather was ghastly and no match was possible.Kelvin Sutherland due to play missed the entire day having returned from Benidorm at 10.30 am.
The weather was little better the next day but we enjoyed a 39 run victory over Sporting Alfas Sunday XI.Jemille hit a splendid 90. Both Wakers and Charles F-S bowled mean spells
On Monday we played the Forty Club Of Spain in what turned out to be both a curiosity and intriguing contest which ended with us requiring a six off the last ball.Jemille did not achieve this and so the match was drawn. Paul Stansfield stoked a powerful century as the opposition set off at great pace but once he wAS out the innings was slowly strangled by accurate bowling. If several catches had been held the score would not have reached the formidable 260
Kevin Smith promoted to open played an inspired innings before advancing speculatively up the wicket to be stumped for a fine 86. The innings began to suffer from a lack of momentum despite the efforts of Bob Cairns so much so that a great deal was still required when a 'recovering' Jemille reached the wicket. Jack Hyams in his 84th year soon joined Jemille with the score at 180 and these two with many refusals including a boundary hit to Georgie Smith on the boundary steadily progressed towards the target.Alan Fisher bowled 19 overs,3-77 and at one point looked to have Nomads sliding to defeat.
Thus we won two and drew one with one cancelled due to rain. There was much good eating, serious study of the late night fayre of Benidorm but a distinct lack of sunshine. The party included many new faces who we hope to see again during the UK season.
