NOMADS in Spain October 2006

Last year we were a party of 28 with 19 players. Somehow and for a variety of reasons this year we were  at maximum a party of 10 with never more than 7 players on tour. On Sunday and Monday we made up to 11 with locals, members of Southwick Wanderers CC also on tour and some occasional local Nomads. Unfortunately Paul Stansfield,Steve Kidgell were unavailble for the Saturday game and David Climent for the Monday one. Last minutes attempts to fly out Paul Wakefield and Michael Thewliss for two days failed due to the return flight cost.

Simon Barter and  James while left us after the Alfas section while Ilija Krunic joined us.It had been hoped that Ilija's brother and Bob Cooke would also join us in La Manga and Steve Kidgell but this did not work out leaving us a playing body of six.

It should be remembered also that three of the party were over sixty and one of those 87 in December. However five of us played five consecutive games without sustaining major injury. Nevertheless Ranjit Latchman sustaining a lip/mouth injury when misfielding off his bowling in the first game. This required stitching and deprived us of a front line batsman when we batted.James woolley a Barter cousin substituted. With a helmet Ranjit batted in the next four games but dislodged a front tooth while eating out in Altea on Sunday evening.

For the record I paid £130.00 return with Iberia, Ranjit Latchman paid £140 and Srikanth £160. Ilija Krunic who flew out on Monday and back Friday paid £120 with BMI. James While who flew BA out on Friday back Monday evening business class paid £140.00. So gentlemen it can not have been the cost of flights that deprived us of your company this autumn.

The results were disappointing. We won one match, lost three and drew one. Yet all five could, maybe should, have been won.

With both Clubs unable to raise full sides, a twenty/twenty match was played as opposed to the scheduled forty over game.

Sporting Alfas had the option of batting first and all their batsmen made useful contributions. Ali top scored with a rapid seventy-one before retiring and Lupson did likewise having reached twenty-seven. Climent scored thirty-eight and Howe twenty, before they fell to the bowling of While and Piercey, and Hall contributed an undefeated twenty.

The Nomads suffered some early setbacks as Muñoz soon accounted for the opening pair. Katttobayana (26) and While (249 then brought some hope to the vistors, but after their dismissal only Piercey (239 was able to make any worthwhile contribution as the team was dismissed for 112 to give Alfas a comfortable 80 run victory. For Alfas, Muñoz claimed 3-22 and Taylor 2-20. Nomads were without Ranjit at hospital being stitched up He would havee opened.

Alfas won the toss and elected to bat. After the loss of a wicket in the second over, Pennick and Marriner (29) took the score to seventy three before the latter was dismissed. With wickets falling around him, Pennick remained resolute before he was caught and bowled two short of his half-century. With Lewis (29) the only other batsman to reach double figures, the Alfas side was dismissed for a very modest 148 in the thirty-eighth over. For the Nomads, Latchman was the most successful bowler, claiming 3-14, while Alfas players guesting for the Nomads also performed well, with Ali claiming 2-27 and junior players Seekings and Daley respectively taking 2-27 and 1-26. Shafique ali had played three times for Nomads before joining Alfas! James While bowled very accurately without reward 8 1 17 0.

Although the Nomads lost two early wickets, Kattaboyina (39) and Johnson (33) took the score to seventy-one before the former fell to a diving catch by Pennick from Marriner's second delivery. With all the remaining batsmen making useful contributions, the Nomads ran out comfortable winners with seven overs of the match remaining.

For Alfas, Lewis and Marriner each claimed two wickets and Matthews and Griffin made some boundary catches look easy.
