Joe Ireland routs Merrow to snatch unlikely victory

Nomads finally broke a prolonged series of defeats on UK soil with an ancient side at Merrow last Sunday. four superb catches in the deep ensured victory and a fine bowling analysis for joe Ireland thanfully back in form(7-29). Andy Marshall took two catches, one on the run and with a juggle while Charles Fellows-Smith held firm the other two. This welcome return to catching competance reduced the home side from a headlong rush to overwhelming victory to one of hanging on for dearl lifeÊ with the fielders crowded round the bat.

Earlier Nomads having won the toss had made heavy weather of  sporting pitch against some good bowling.Neeraj Nayar played a uncontrolled pull straight to midwicket. andy Marshall failed to take his rare opportunity up the order with a wild flash at a short rising ball to be caught behind-2-2. Jermey Lascelles and joe Ireland added 26 before Joe played aleading edge attempting to drive to the on where a straighter shot was more appropriate.

Nick Cooper joined Jeremy and these two wee beginning to settle into alarge partnership helped by some gentler bowling when Jeremy drove early and with a hint of bump ball was caught gently at cover-82-4.

Richard Fanthorpe now joined nick cooper in a stand of 28 which would have been double had he managed to give Nick some strike. While pondering this predicament he ran out Nick for a useful 32 in an unfortunately comical fashion-110-5 which with charlton Lamb bowled for a duck was soon 110-6.Our guest hit a curious six runs before being bowled 119-7.

The Hon Sec thus joined Fanthorpe at 119 -7 with at least 50 overs of the match still to go.To the irritation of some of the Merrow players these two and then Charles F-S added a further valuable 37 runs off  16 overs to end all out 156 off 52 overs.

With the Merrow batsmen raring to go and Nomad fielders ready the home team lost several overs from a failure to send out some umpires. However that looked irrelevant as Martin Bakker smote Andy Marshall for 12 off the first overÊ and S Perry much the same off over two from Charles Fellows-Smith. although we had taken two wickets the Merrow score stood at 86-2 off 10 overs when Bakker mishit Ireland towards deep mid wicket.andy ran round caught it juggle it and Bakker was on his way for a storming 61 off  little over 30 balls.

That catch changed the game and a remarkable win was achieved. As a result a significant body of ancient Nomads eventually left the Merrow clubhouse many hours later having enjoyed jugs and rounds from Joe Ireland and umpire/keeper Mark Williams.

However we seemed to lose a lot of friends at Merrow by batting so long!!!!!!
